S-CAP to celebrate World AIDS Day
Since June 5, 1981, when the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first classified, the spread of
HIV/AIDS continues. While patients with the disease are living longer, it by no
means is an end to the virus. Globally, nearly 40 million people live with
HIV/AIDS, and in 2005 alone, approximately 4.1 million people worldwide, half of
them women, became infected with HIV, and about 2.8 million individuals with
HIV/AIDS died. As of Dec 31, 2005 there were more than 1,466 reported cases of
HIV/AIDS in the 25-county region served by the Southern Colorado AIDS Project;
more than 490 AIDS-related deaths have been reported in this area since the
onset of the epidemic.
World AIDS day is celebrated on Fri, Dec 1. The Southern Colorado AIDS
Project will hold a candlelight vigil, at All Souls Unitarian Universalist
Church at 730 N Tejon beginning at 6 pm.
