CSU–Pueblo teacher groups sponsor 5th annual Book DriveThis holiday season, the Colorado State University-Pueblo Teacher Education Association and Teacher Education Program in collaboration with several Pueblo business and community partners are sponsoring the 5th Annual Bring a Kid a Book (BAKAB) book drive. The 2005 BAKAB goal is to raise 2,500 books to put into the hands of school-aged children. High need elementary and K-8 schools in Districts 60 and 70 will be selected to receive the donated books. The books will go directly to the students attending these schools so that each student will have a book to call his or her own. Books received over the minimum will be given to additional high-need schools or to other child-serving organizations in the Pueblo community. Since BAKAB began, more than 5,700 books have been contributed to Columbian, Baca, Avondale, Minnequa, and Parkview elementary schools. Significant donations also have been made to the YWCA, Children’s Advocacy Center, and to the Junior League. Donation boxes may be found in every building on the CSU-Pueblo campus. A pick-up service is available for large donations. An Outstanding BAKAB Partner Award will be presented to the business or community agency that raises the most books during the drive. The winning business displays a “traveling” plaque throughout the year. The BAKAB book drive will continue through Christmas Eve. All books will be delivered to the area schools when students return from the winter holiday break. Individuals or businesses seeking more information about the program may contact Cindy Gutierrez in the Teacher Education Program at (719) 549-2278.
